American artist, abolitionist, writer, professor, and co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement. In 2018 her first book was co-written with journalist Asha Bandele and titled When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir. Her second book, An Abolitionist's Handbook: 12 Steps to Change Yourself and the World, was released in 2022. She is a professor at Otis College of Art and Design and at Prescott College.
She attended UCLA where she earned a degree in religion and philosophy, followed by an MFA from the University of Southern California.
She created the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter in 2013.
She was born in Los Angeles, California. She was raised as a Jehovah's Witness and grew up with her mother as she did not meet her father until she was 11 years old. She has two brothers and a sister. In 2016 she married her wife, fellow social activist Janaya Khan.
